4 Ways to Create Storage in Your Custom Home

4 Ways to Create Storage in Your Custom Home

One problem with many modern homes is insufficient storage. So when you decide to start building your own custom home, you need to take that into account.

One problem with many modern homes is insufficient storage. So when you decide to start building your own custom home, you need to take that into account. How can custom homeowners increase the amount of storage space that they have available? Let’s find out together!

Suggestion 1: Use the Attic

The attic is a space that is often overlooked and underutilized. The attic can take one of two forms: a loft over the garage or a concealed space hidden above the upstairs hallway between the intersection of two or more bedrooms. You’ve heard of finished basements before – finished attics are rare, but give you even more room for storage, and in some cases, maybe activities too!

Suggestion 2: Expand the Garage

A typical garage already affords much more storage space. Plus, there is room for a workshop or other areas dedicated to particular pastimes and hobbies. When you expand the garage, you gain even more storage space, especially if the garage is optimized for two or three cars as opposed to just one. Just think of the possibilities: You could put bikes and lawnmowers in here when they are not in use, for example.

Suggestion 3: Hide the Storage

Another idea is to take advantage of hidden storage spaces. Storage benches and ottomans make great options for holding more items, such as blankets and pillows, keeping them out of sight without sacrificing too much floor space. You can also use fold-up beds or beds that can be raised up to allow for more storage underneath for the time being while you don’t have any guests to accommodate.

Suggestion 4: Get Creative

Our last tip is simply this: use your imagination! A custom home is an empty canvas just waiting for you to turn it into a masterpiece. Hooks, shelving, cabinets, and shadowboxes can all help increase the amount of storage you have while also showcasing your collections of interesting talking points that you want to show off as conversation starters!
