An Exploration of the In-Law Suite

An Exploration of the In-Law Suite

You may have heard of the term in-law suite and wondered what it means. Well, we are here to tell you that we can explain. Please read along to learn more about in-law suites!

Many types of home additions can yield benefits that you might not otherwise expect. With the ways that family dynamics are changing in today’s society, multiple generations living under one roof could be the new normal as we continue to move into the future. You may have heard of the term in-law suite and wondered what it means. Well, we are here to tell you that we can explain. Please read along to learn more about in-law suites!

So What is an In-Law Suite?

Traditionally speaking, the in-law suite can occupy part of the home’s basement. It can also be considered part of the home but located in an external building such as a cottage, converted garage, or pool house. It all depends on the size of the structure it is associated with; in-law suites need to be equipped with bedrooms and bathrooms, but sometimes they can also include sitting rooms and kitchens.

Other Ways to Use the Space

Even so, the in-law suite that you attach to your home doesn’t need to fulfill one sole purpose all of the time. It can also serve as a home office (always useful in times like these); guest quarters; a place for an older child or grandchild to stay; or even a tiny rental apartment that you can sublet.

The Basics of Buying and Selling

If you are looking to buy a home instead of building one, then the presence of an in-law suite could be what seals the deal. Likewise, you might consider adding an in-law suite when it is time to sell your home and move on. Configurations that incorporate open floor plans are the best way to make the most of your space.
