Can You Easily Identify Load-Bearing Walls?

These walls are known as load-bearing because they are responsible for holding up much more weight than non-load-bearing walls, which are also called partition walls.

Home remodeling plans can take several different forms. However, if you are planning to rearrange the configuration of the walls, there are many more tricky questions to answer. As a result, you might not know how to spot a load-bearing wall or how to distinguish it from its counterparts that are not supporting your home’s overall structure. Here at Accessible Home Builders, we believe that quality is standard when it comes to both home designs and home remodeling endeavors. So tell us, how can we help you?

The Simplest Definition

Let’s start by defining what a load-bearing wall is supposed to be in the first place. They are meant to hold up floors and support the roof. These walls are known as load-bearing because they are responsible for holding up much more weight than non-load-bearing walls, which are also called partition walls.

Position Relative to Joists

One of the hallmarks of a load-bearing wall is its position. In this case, determine where it is in relation to a joist. If your wall is parallel to the floor joists or ceiling joists above, then it isn’t load-bearing. Conversely, walls that are perpendicular to the joists are, more than likely, going to be load-bearers.

Questions about Partial Walls

Now, let’s turn our attention to what constitutes a partial wall. For those homeowners unfamiliar with the term, it simply describes a component of the house where the wall in question doesn’t intersect with an adjacent wall. However, microlam beams could be added to help carry more weight. As such, not all partial walls function as partitions as well.
