The Right Order for Bathroom Renovations

This blog will go over the initial steps to prioritize during a bathroom renovation.

Renovating your bathroom is an essential part of making a house your own. The design of a bathroom is such a personal choice.

It is a good idea to combine your bathroom renovations into one big project, like replacing the tile, the sink, the floor, and the lighting all in one go. But in what order should you remodel your bathroom?

Should you start with the simple tasks or tackle the complicated projects first? This blog will go over the initial steps to prioritize during a bathroom renovation.

Have a Clear Plan

Before renovating, spend time planning and designing your new bathroom. This involves determining your budget, choosing a layout, and selecting materials and finishes. Consult with bathroom renovators to get professional advice and create a detailed plan covering all renovation aspects.

Demolition

After planning, it’s time to prepare the bathroom for demolition. This step involves removing existing fixtures, tiles, and any other elements that will be replaced. Ensure you have the necessary tools and safety gear; hire professional bathroom renovators if you’re uncomfortable with this task.

  • Turn off water and electricity: Ensure all utilities off to avoid accidents.
  • Remove fixtures: Carefully remove the bathtub, shower, toilet, sink, and any cabinets or shelving.
  • Tear down tiles and walls: Use the appropriate tools to remove old tiles, drywall, or plaster.

Start with the Wet Area

The wet area of your bathroom—typically where the shower, tub, and major plumbing fixtures are located—should be your first focus. This area is the most labor-intensive part of a bathroom remodel and is prone to hidden problems such as water damage or outdated plumbing.

Updating Plumbing

Your contractor will likely start by updating the plumbing. This includes making necessary adjustments to accommodate new fixtures like a modern walk-in shower or tub. Accurate plumbing updates prevent future leaks and ensure all new fixtures function correctly.

Installing the Tub or Shower Base

The tub or shower base will be installed next after the plumbing updates. Choosing the right base is essential for your bathroom’s functionality and aesthetics.

Finishing with Acrylic or Tile Walls

Once the base is securely installed, the walls around the tub or shower can be finished. Whether you choose acrylic or tile, this step is critical in defining the look of your wet area.

Install Fixtures

With the rough-in plumbing and electrical work complete, you can start installing the main fixtures. This phase brings your bathroom renovation ideas to life as you see the space take shape.

  • Bathtub: Install the bathtub, ensuring it is properly leveled and sealed.
  • Shower: Set up the shower base or pan, and install the shower enclosure or door.
  • Toilet: Position and secure the toilet according to the plumbing rough-in.

Add the Finishing Touches

Finally, you’ll add the finishing touches, such as mirrors, lighting, and vent fans. If your home isn’t already equipped, you may need to install additional ductwork to vent the fan outside, which is essential for moisture control and preventing mold growth.
